Red Squirrel of the Highlands

Information for Surveyors

Currently, there is a Red squirrel Highland survey taking place.  If you would like to take part, see the events section for training days and/or contact Juliet for a survey pack.  This pack has instructions for Levels 1 & 2 type surveys. Let us know where you live and/or where you would like to survey.  We can then send a detailed map where surveys have NOT yet taken place.  This helps us target woodlands that need to be surveyed.

Level 1 survey

The aim of level 1 is to establish presence or absence of red squirrels in woodlands.  This type of survey is a basic way of establishing presence or absence of red squirrels.  This method is for places where we have few or no red squirrel records - it is an 'extreme squirrelling method'.

Level 2 survey

The aim of level 2 is to provide us with more information about a particular wood in terms of squirrels.  It will show where they are feeding, what they are feeding on and can give us an idea of approximate density within that wood.

Request a map from Juliet and then decide which survey type would be most appropriate.  We can advise on this, as it will depend upon the specific location.  Here are the 3 types of survey appropriate to the Highlands:

  1. Feeding sign survey
  2. Visual survey
  3. Hair-tube survey
