Magic mushrooms

Did you know that mushrooms or fungi are a very imporant part of the red squirrel's diet?  In the Autumn, 30% of a red squirrels diet is mushrooms and if you look on the forest floor, you might see some nibbled.

In the winter, they store mushrooms in their dreys by hanging them up to dry them.  Just like a TV chef!

You can see a red squirrel below ehjoying an early mushroom - thanks to Fiona Clacher for these great pictures.

Have a look at this film to see evidence of nibbled mushrooms at Foyers on Loch Ness.

Go on, be a real red squirrel detective and look our for yourself next time you are out!
