Red Squirrel of the Highlands

Irish red squirrel revival

This is excellent news for the red squirrels of the Republic of Ireland!

On Monday, 31st of January 2011, the Irish Times reported that the Irish red squirrel is making a fightback against extinction from grey squirrels in the west of Ireland.  Primarily, this is due to translocation projects which have moved red squirrels from the east into woodlands in Co. Mayo and Co. Galway in the west.  A recent study shows that the project has proved a great success with evidence that the squirrels settled into their new surroundings and started breeding in a matter of months.

It's interesting and good news, to hear about the success of these projects.

Is there any fresh news available about the Dundonell and Loch Broom area Red Squirrel populations; and are there any plans to carry out similar projects any where else on the Scottish west coast.
