Red Squirrel of the Highlands

Reds thriving at Dundonnell

03 November 2011 by juliet

This is Roy Dennis with a group of red squirrel enthusiasts at Dundonnell Estate during the summer.

He was describing to the group how captured red squirrels from Strathspey and Moray were released into the wood in 2008.

After 3 years - we can see that the original translocated red squirrels have bred every year and that there is now a very healthy population at Dundonnell and surrounds.  You can download a copy of Roy's recent report by clicking here

Juliet was out with Roy on the Estate this week and saw 3 squirrels in the woods - one was a juvenile feeding on larch cones high in the trees.  We were with a student from Inverness College who is starting to undertake a study of red squirrel activitiy using remote cameras over the winter season.  Good luck to her and look forward to seeing her results!

Have a look at the sightings page to see records of reds in and around Dundonnell and if you have a record or even better A PHOTO OF A DUNDONNELL RED SQUIRREL, please do send it to Juliet.

Would you like to see more of this elsewhere in the Highlands?  If so - make your thoughts known by making a comment.  Many thanks.

Several weeks ago we placed a nut box for the squirrel we spotted running along our fence. We presumed it had changed its route as it had not been sighted for weeks but to our great delight, yesterday, not one but four squirrels played around the garden for approximately 30 minutes after feeding on the nuts.

As yet, I have not managed to photograph squirrels, as my camera battery was flat but, hopefully, will get some shots of them shortly.

If the student from Inverness College would like to set up a watch please do get in touch as we would like to help.
