Have a look at this link to
play a film of Juliet being interviewed in some Highland forests, a
couple of weeks ago in late September. Autumn is the
best time for seeing red squirrels as they are busy foraging and
hiding food for the winter ahead.
Programme presenter Gill Williams and cameraman
Steve Hills of greentravelguides joined Juliet on a Highland
tour seeking out red squirrels. We were lucky enought to see
many red squirrels, as the marvellous film footage shows. You
can find out how to find signs of red squirrels, where is best to
look and when. This can help you become a
professional red squirrel detective!
We found dreys and stripped cones at Foyers on
Loch Ness-side; squirrel opened hazel nuts on sides of the
Foyers-Inverness road and saw lots of red squirrels at
Abernethy, which is owned and managed by the RSPB. We spent ages watching a family of
red squirrels at Abernethy. You can watch
their antics as they compete for the best nuts and the best shelter
....
It was a great day out and I hope that the film will help to
further promote the importance of our red squirrels of the
Highlands.
