Red Squirrel of the Highlands

Fabulous film

Have a look at this link to play a film of Juliet being interviewed in some Highland forests, a couple of weeks ago in late September.  Autumn is the best time for seeing red squirrels as they are busy foraging and hiding food for the winter ahead.

Programme presenter Gill Williams and cameraman Steve Hills of greentravelguides joined Juliet on a Highland tour seeking out red squirrels.  We were lucky enought to see many red squirrels, as the marvellous film footage shows.  You can find out how to find signs of red squirrels, where is best to look and when.  This can help you become a professional red squirrel detective!

We found dreys and stripped cones at Foyers on Loch Ness-side; squirrel opened hazel nuts on sides of the Foyers-Inverness road and saw lots of red squirrels at Abernethy, which is owned and managed by the RSPB.  We spent ages watching a family of red squirrels at Abernethy.  You can watch their antics as they compete for the best nuts and the best shelter ....

It was a great day out and I hope that the film will help to further promote the importance of our red squirrels of the Highlands.

Hi Juliet,

Alec's drinking pal Hugh Stuart has a squirrel feeding station outside their patio doors and have seen seven at once. They are at Craigrory
number seven I think on the black Isle just off the A 9 past the Munlochy turn off but on the left and they are down near the sea. His wife says the squirrels go off every now and then for eight weeks to have babies and
bring them back to the garden.

I told my grandomtehr how you helped. She said, "bake them a cake!"
